Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year!

READING

We are currently working on the novel Sarah, Plain and Tall.  This book is an example of historical fiction.  That means that it happened during a time period in the past and is NOT a true story.  We will be on this story for several weeks.  As we explore this story, we will also be learning about character, character traits, setting, sequencing, plot, introduction, and conclusion.  In addition we will look at figurative language (when author's say things that do not mean what they say)- for example, "I am so hungry that I could eat a bear!" or "You got up on the wrong side of the bed!"

SCIENCE

In science we are learning about ecosystems.  This unit will include pond ecosystems, desert ecosystems, ocean ecosystems, tundra ecosystems, grassland ecosystems... Other vocabulary included in this unit are:  community, population, food chains, food webs, enegy pyramids, decomposers, producers and consumers.

Here are a few pictures from the first day of school.  What a great group of boys and girls! I am soooo excited to have the opportunity to teach these kiddos this year!!  It is going to be an AWESOME school year!!!!
