SES Family,
We are in the process of finalizing our fall calendar. Upcoming events to be watching for include:
Coke Sales – our school-wide fall fundraiser
Fall Break- October 12th, 13th, and 14th No School
Honors Breakfast – for families of our 4th , 5th, and 6th graders that performed great on last year’s testing
Grandparents Lunch – a day when all grandparents are welcome to attend and have lunch with us
School Book Fair- students can purchase items in our library (funny how this seems to always fall on grandparents day ha ha)
Election Day- November 8th No School
Thanksgiving Dinner – hasn’t been determined whether it will be on Tuesday 22nd or Wednesday 23rd yet
Thanksgiving Break – November 24th & 25th
Several people have asked about our “SES IS GOING PLACES” bulletin board. We will be doing this again beginning the week after fall break. This is a board where students bring in a picture of themselves in a Salem Elementary shirt when they have traveled somewhere. In the past we have pictures of SES shirts from as far away as Alaska, Ireland, and Australia. Students also have brought in many pictures from various sites here in Russell County. If you travel anywhere, please take a picture and send it to school, and we will display it on our bulletin board here at school.
As always, if I can be of any help, please don’t hesitate to call.
Sincerely,
Terry Grider
SES Principal

SES Family,
I wanted to take just a few minutes to welcome you to the 2011-12 school year here at SES. Our entire staff has had a busy summer in preparing for the upcoming year. There are many changes taking place in Kentucky with regards to education and our teachers have made, and continue to make, great efforts to provide the students at Salem Elementary with every advantage available to receive a great education as well as a fantastic elementary school experience.
At Salem Elementary we truly do operate as a family. We strive to make ourselves available to help with whatever situation may arise. We have a Family Resource Center at SES that can help with all types of issues from health care to school supplies. The director of our SES Family Resource Center is Phil Carney (Mr. Phil) and he can be reached at 866-7850 or 866 -6197.
We also want to encourage two-way communication between the home and our school staff. Each teacher in our school has e-mail. All teachers' e-mail addresses have the same format, for example, mine is terry.grider@russell.kyschools.us. If you wanted to reach your child's teacher, just substitute their name for mine. For example, to e-mail Mrs. Lisa, use lisa.kerr@russell.kyschools.us.
We also set time aside each day when you can meet with your child's teacher. We try to use these times so that teachers will not be taken away from their class. All you need to do is call SES or e-mail the teacher and we will set up a day to meet. The times are:
Kindergarten. 9:25 - 10:10
1st Grade. 10:10- 10:55
2nd Grade. 12:00 - 12:45
3rd Grade. 12:45 - 1:30
4th Grade. 1:30 - 2:15
5th Grade. 8:40 - 9:25
6th Grade. 7:45 - 8:30
We do have new starting and ending times this year at SES. Students are to be in homeroom at 7:25. Anything later than that will be a tardy. We will begin serving breakfast at 7:00. If your child is going to eat breakfast at school, please try to have them at school by 7:10 to insure that they have time before homeroom. Parent pickup will be at 2:40. Please use the back door to the cafeteria for afternoon pickups.
Lunchroom prices for 2011-12
Breakfast. Full Price $1.25. Reduced Price. $.30
Lunch. Full Price $2.25. Reduced Price. $.40
Upcoming important dates for Salem Elementary
August 22nd - PTO Meeting 5:30 in cafeteria
August 29th - Preschool begins
August 30th - School Picture Day
In closing, I want to welcome you, or welcome you back, to our SES family. Whether you have been at Salem Elementary for six years, or this is your first, I truly want this to be your best year. We have a staff that pours their heart into their work and cares for and serves every child every day. If I can be of any help, please don't hesitate to call.
Sincerely,
Terry Grider
Principal, Salem Elementary
