Informational/How-To Writings
6th grade is currently working on their informational/how-to pieces. We began this unit with some basic in-class activities on how to make a phone call and how to make a pb&j sandwich, sounds easy??? Just ask your child how well they did explaining how to do those things...we had a lot of laughs :) They are choosing a topic to focus on that will become a "how to speech" for the next week. Yes, your child will present their information in front of the class....they can do it!!!
Can you convince me??? Persuasive Writings
5th grade has been learning all types of persuasive techniques that are presented to us on a daily basis through newspaper ads, magazines, and t.v. They are in the process of learning how to write their own persuasive pieces and finding the answer to the question....can you convinve me??? In the weeks to come we are going to be focusing on a simple paragraph structure that they can use throughout the year in all of their writings but will be mainly use to create an entire persuasive piece. If you child begins using some of these persuasive techniques on you just smile and know that they are taking their learning to heart :)
Science
What's the matter???? Well a lot in Science these days as we are beginning a unit on types of matter, properties of matter, and how matter can change. We have had a lot of fun exploring how the mass of different objects affects their placement in water in an experiment called, "Float or Sink." Then we also looked at how various types of liquids interact with each other...the good ole sweet corn syrup was their favorite :) In the weeks to come we are going more in depth with mass, volume, density, and weight. It is a lot to understand but we will figure out, "what is the matter?"
