With School back in full swing, you may have noticed that your child seems somewhat disorganized or that his/her study skills could use some improvement.  Below are a few tips that will  allow you to help your child with study habits.

  1. Parents need to respect differences in their children’s learning styles and study habits.  Some children need complete silence while others thrive with soft music in the background.
  2. Make sure your child has good lighting while studying, not too bright or too dim.
  3. Encourage your child to work at a desk or table with a straight firm, chair.
  4. Make sure the room is not too warm.  They may work quicker in a cooler setting.
  5. Limit distractions.  Keep siblings separated.  TURN OFF HIS/HER CELL PHONE.
  6. Make sure child has plenty of supplies on hand.  This will save time by keeping the child from searching for necessary items.  One suggestion is to have a small container with all supplies (pencil, paper, ruler, crayons etc.) that could be needed.
  7. Short breaks are necessary for lengthy assignments. (Eat a snack , get some water, and do some brief physical activity)
  8. Have children do their least favorite subjects first to get it out of the way.
  9. Students should go over returned worksheets and tests to check for mistakes.
  10. Teach children “tricks” to help them remember.  For instance, to remember the names of the Great Lakes, use the acronym HOMES (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior)
  11. Children who forget what assignments they have should use a homework planner to write down assignments and due dates.
  12. Help with organizational skills by providing different folders for different subjects.  Use both pockets and label one for unfinished work and one for work to be turned in.
  13. Get organized before going to bed.  Place books and homework in the book bag.
  14. Always look over your child’s homework when finished.  If it is not quality work, have them make necessary changes.
